National Wool Museum Poet Awarded at the National Poetry Competition

2012-04-03Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch from New Quay who is currently the poet in residence at the National Wool Museum and has been awarded second prize in the National Poetry Competition, announced at a prize giving ceremony in London on 28 March.
With over 11,000 entries this year the Poetry Society’s National Poetry Competition is one of the world’s biggest and best known poetry competitions, established in 1978 and Samantha's poem, Ponting reached second place this year.
Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch said: “I am delighted with the prize as the competition is an very prestigious. And to top it all one of my students (Rosalind Hudis) atTrinity SaintDavidUniversitywhere I am Poetry Fellow one day a week, was awarded a commendation in the same competition.”
The winners were selected by judges Colette Bryce, John Glenday and Jackie Kay. The top-three winning poems, including ‘Ponting’ by Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch was published in the spring issue of Poetry Review on 29 March.

The writing surgeries run on the following Wednesdays - 9th May, 23rd May, 6th June, 20th June. Samantha also runs free writing workshops on the second Saturday of the month at the Museum until July. The next writing workshop will be on Saturday 14th April and will focus on writing about character.
