National Wool Museum's Textiles at the Eisteddfod

The collections of the NationalWoolMuseum, Dre-fach Felindre, are strongly featured on the Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales stand at the National Urdd Eisteddfod in Cilwendeg this year.

The stand showcases textiles – past, present and future, with emphasis on the ‘hands-on’ experience. This includes opportunities to knit and weave and to dress up in vintage 60s clothing. On Wednesday and Thursday Carys Hedd will be on the stand up cycling old clothes into modern items of clothing. On Saturday the Knitting Club, who usually meet in the Museum will be teaching visitors to the stand how to knit woollen cakes.

Also on show on the stand is a variety of Wales’ wool products and a display of textiles, reflecting the best textile designs over the years. Contemporary artwork, which is usually on display at the NationalWoolMuseum is also showcased, work inspired by the Museum and its story. This includes woven textiles by Laura Thomas, prints by Julia Griffiths Jones and the end result of projects undertaken between the Museum and school and college students.

Ann Whittall, Manager of the NationalWoolMuseum said: “Not every year the Eisteddfod comes within a stone’s throw to the NationalWoolMuseum here at Dre-fach Felindre. After enjoying a taster on the stand, this might entice people, as they are in the area, to visit the Museum, free of charge, to meet our craftspeople, enjoy a tour and for refreshments at our café.”

She added: “The collections of the Museum tell the story of Wales and they are the people’s collections so hopefully visitors to the Eisteddfod will take advantage of their visit to one cultural event, to visit another heritage site.”

The Amgueddfa Cymru - NationalMuseum of Wales’ stand is located to your left as you enter the Eisteddfod field.
