New Pop-up Museum debuts in Cardiff

To celebrate the first ever Welsh Museums Festival and to coincide with this year’s Museums Association Conference, a new partnership between Cardiff Story MuseumAmgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales and the Heritage Lottery Fund has been launched to create a public-led Pop-Up Museum.

Designed to encourage public participation, the Pop-Up Museum will be developed and created by members of the public who have interesting stories to tell about Wales’s capital city.

How will this work? The themes and content will be created during the two-day conference (9 & 10 October) at the Wales Millennium Centre and will be on display until Sun 12 October. Anyone in the locality is welcome to come along and either see or help put it together - they will also have the opportunity to put their own object or story on display.

Over the next two months, there will be three workshops for people to find out just how they can become involved and discover how a Pop-Up Museum can work.

The workshops will be held at the Cardiff Story Museum on:

  •         Saturday 30 August, 11am-1pm
  •         Thursday 11 September, 6pm-8pm
  •         Saturday 27 September, 11am-1pm

Participants will be encouraged to blog and tweet throughout the creation of the pop-up using the hash tag #popupmuseum, so everyone can keep up to date with the progress and the interesting stories shared.

Speaking about the project, Heledd Fychan from Amgueddfa Cymru said: “The most exciting element of this Pop-Up Museum, which makes it completely different from other such projects, is the fact that the public are in complete control of it.

“Without their input it won’t exist so we need objects and stories for this to work. We’re very excited to be working in partnership with Cardiff Story Museum and the Heritage Lottery Fund, and look forward to seeing the end result.”

Arran Rees from Cardiff Story Museum said: “This Pop-Up Museum will provide opportunities for people to give their opinion about Cardiff – the capital city of Wales, whether they’ve visited before or not. It includes those who are Cardiff born and bred and those who’ve stepped off the train for the first time, delegates at the Museums Association conference and families visiting the Wales Millennium Centre as part of the Welsh Museums Festival.

“Anyone with a Cardiff story to tell is encouraged to get involved, either by attending the workshops, participating online or by getting involved in the actual creation of the pop-up in October.”
