Previously Hywel served in the then European Commission as its Director for education, training and youth policy and represented the Commission at the OECD, UNESCO and Council of Europe. In his role as the European Commission's Director General for employment, social policy and industrial relations he held special responsibility for the operation of the European Social Fund.

Elisabeth Elias said: “I am delighted to welcome Dr Hywel Ceri Jones as Trustee of Amgueddfa Cymru. He is highly regarded in his field and his experience and expertise will undoubtedly be of great benefit both to the other Trustees and to Amgueddfa Cymru as an institution. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all members of the Board for their ongoing commitment to the work of the Museum.”

Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates said: “I am delighted that the Museum has appointed someone of the calibre of Dr. Hywel Ceri Jones. His experience and expertise, particularly in terms of European policy and funding and the opportunities they present, will, I am sure, be of huge benefit to the Museum over the coming years.”

Members of the Board are not paid, but are reimbursed for reasonable travel and subsistence costs. Four Board meetings are held annually and Trustees are also expected to serve on sub committees.

The appointment made by the President of Amgueddfa Cymru has been made in accordance with the Code of Practice of the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
