Wanted: Your favourite object

Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales is asking visitors to the Urdd Eisteddfod in Caerphilly to help create a temporary museum

During the Urdd Eisteddfod in Caerphilly (25 – 30 May 2015), Amgueddfa Cymru will be urging visitors to the field to bring with them an object of their choice, to feature as part of a Pop-Up Museum (#popupmuseum).

This is an opportunity for members of the public together with Barnardo’s Caerphilly Young Carers, to help develop the content and themes of a museum which will be situated at Amgueddfa Cymru’s stand for six days.

“We are asking visitors to bring with them an objct which means something to them, or has a story to tell,” said Owain Rhys, Amgueddfa Cymru’s Community Engagement and Participation Manager, one of the leaders of the project.

“It can be a toy, a book, a t-shirt or even a funny story! This is an opportunity for everyone to get involved in creating an unique museum at the Urdd Eisteddfod.”

Those taking part will be encouraged to tweet about their role in the project using the hash tag #popupmuseum, so that everyone can keep up to date with the progress and stories shared.

Visitors to Amgueddfa Cymru’s stand at the Urdd Eisteddfod will also have the chance to create a box of memories and quilt on the theme ‘My favourite memory…’ as well as create a map of Caerphilly with the cartoonist Huw Aaron. This project is in association with Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Arts Service and Literature Wales.

Continuing with the idea of sharing memories, local people will be invited by community arts organisation Head4Arts to visit a World War One bunker at the Eisteddfod field. Head4Arts’ transformed transit van, complete with artefacts, memorabilia, and activities relating to the conflict, will be parked next to the Museum’s stand to raise awareness of First World War centenary. The initiative is part of “World War One: A Valleys View”- a recent project that was supported by a £10,000 award from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
