Science and Solar Power marks Father’s Day at the Museum

The National Waterfront Museum will be showcasing a mix of cars, buses and science this weekend to celebrate Father’s Day.

Families can pop in to create their very own Superhero Mask (19 June: 12.30pm-3.30pm) or see a live Superhero Science Show (19 June: 1pm & 3pm) with Science Made Simple. This show will look at how today’s scientists have gone from zero to hero doing awesome feats in areas such as gravity, forces, energy, light and space. There will also be a hero-themed family film on at 2.30pm in the Warehouse Gallery.

Then outside, the Museum will be helping to celebrate this year’s Festival of Transport by displaying a collection of classic buses and coaches as well as showcasing the famous Sunrider solar powered car.

2016 is a significant year for the Sunrider as it marks its 30 year anniversary – 30 years of UK solar car development – and to formally celebrate its first crossing from the Olympic Stadium in Athens on 21 June 1986 to Lisbon in Portugal, it will be heading to the Museum for display on Friday and staying for the weekend.

To complement its arrival and to highlight the latest developments on solar powered vehicles, the CUER (Cambridge University Eco Racing) car Evolution will also be on show.

Speaking about the Sunrider, Bruce Cross part of the GB-Sol Team, said: “We are delighted to bring the car to the National Waterfront Museum this weekend. It is a great opportunity to see UK engineering at its best and we hope to gather together both the expedition team and support team to be on hand to answer questions throughout the day.”

Speaking about the events, Curator Ian Smith said: “It’s a great chance for visitors to come along and enjoy some family-themed crafts and activities as well as see nostalgic transport including the famous Sunrider."
