Share your memories of Wales’s historic Euro 2016 journey

Have you been swept up by the excitement of the Welsh football team’s amazing exploits at Euro 2016? Then help us collect objects and memories that will tell the story of the team and the fans that will be remembered as part of our nation’s history.

Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales and Wrexham Museum have teamed up to create a pop up museum at National Museum Cardiff on Friday 8 July, to coincide with the team’s return to Wales.

If you have any objects that you would like to display; anything that you would like to donate; memories that you would like to share, come along anytime to the National Museum from 10am – 4.30pm tomorrow.

They will add to Wrexham Museum’s collection of Mark Hughes and Ryan Giggs’ international shirts, Seymour Morris’ international cap from 1936, Wales V Turkey a programme from 1978 and much more. Also on show will be a selection from Amgueddfa Cymru’s collection including a shirt worn by Walter Robbins during a game against Scotland in 1930 and a leather football from the 1960’s.

Wrexham, of course, is where the Football Association of Wales was established in 1876 and the famous Racecourse ground is the oldest international stadium in the World, with the first international game played against Scotland. Wrexham Museum is the home of the Welsh National Football Collection and is currently hosting a free exhibition called Touched by Greatness: The Story of Welsh International Football.

Steve Grenter, Heritage and Archives Lead, Wrexham Council said:

“I’m delighted that our museum is going to be involved in the celebrations to mark the teams return from France, the impact the team’s exploits have had across the nation has been incredible and it’s important that we collect as much material as possible to mark the incredible events of the last few weeks.”

A giant ‘thank you’ card will be at every one of Wales’ national museums as well as Wrexham museum tomorrow, for visitors to sign and show their appreciation for the fantastic efforts of our Welsh team. They will be delivered to the Football Association of Wales next week.

David Anderson, Director General, Amgueddfa Cymru said:

“There is no doubt about it, this is an historical moment for Welsh football and for Wales. As Wales’ national museum, it is our role to collect objects and memories to capture this significant moment in our history as a nation.”

If you can’t attend our event tomorrow but would like to donate an item, please contact fflur.gwynn@museumwales.ac.uk.

Other national organisations are also collecting stories and memorabilia including the National Library of Wales and People’s Collection Wales.
