£275k funding boost for Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales

From Chinese art and dinosaur babies to peregrines and accessible online collections, visitors to Amgueddfa Cymru’s seven national museums are set to benefit next year from generous funding by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.

The organization's Development team, under the leadership of its new Director, Richard Nicholls, has secured £275k from the charity lottery, which will help finance its dynamic programme of events, activities and exhibitions in 2017.

Some of the money will be used to stage the family exhibition Dinosaur Babies (27 May-5 November 2017) at National Museum Cardiff, which will be an opportunity to take a rare and exciting look at the fascinating family life of dinosaurs through their eggs, nests and embryos.

Also, next spring will see the launch of Amgueddfa Cymru’s Collections Online, made possible thanks to players of the People’s Postcode Lottery. When this project goes live it will contain over 500,000 records from the national collections and become a fantastic resource for anyone seeking to create teaching materials, private study, art and cultural projects.

Players of the People’s Postcode Lottery have generously supported Amgueddfa Cymru since 2013. The lottery charity not only helps fund the public programme but also enables Amgueddfa Cymru to build on its work in providing visitors, particularly children and young people at risk of exclusion from formal education, with new skills, self-confidence and experiences that will raise their aspirations and help them seek further education and employment opportunities.

Richard Nicholls began in his role as Amgueddfa Cymru’s Development Director in August following a period of five years as Director of Income Resources for Age Cymru. Before that he was Director of Income Generation, Tenovus Cancer Care and Head of Major Gifts / Acting Head of Development & Alumni Relations at The University of Liverpool. He said:

“It is no secret that public sector organizations such as ourselves are all facing financial challenges. This is why funding from players of the People’s Postcode Lottery is vital if we are to sustain the level of service and diverse programme our visitors expect from us.

“Players of the People’s Postcode Lottery have been long-term supporters of Amgueddfa Cymru and we value their support hugely. The Development team has done a fantastic job in developing the partnership over many years.”

In his role as Development Director, Richard Nicholls’ priorities include inspiring new levels of support for Amgueddfa Cymru, increasing membership and developing fundraising training for staff.
