A brand new craft weekend is coming to St Fagans National Museum of History on 15 & 16 June. Join in the fun as the Museum comes alive with demonstrations, masterclasses and activities for the whole family.

Craft and making is at the heart of St Fagans and its collections. The Museum’s galleries are filled with handmade objects - some over 200,000 years old.

See master craftspeople demonstrating their skills, including the Museum’s resident blacksmith, weaver, miller and clog maker. There will be a host of extra crafts on display as visiting experts demonstrate traditional skills such as slate splitting, basket making and shearing.

Get hands on and learn a new skill in the mini masterclasses. Led by a friendly expert, these two hour taster sessions are the perfect way to try out a new craft. Choose from wood carving, cross stitch and flint knapping, plus many more.

Younger crafters can drop in to one of the family friendly activity sessions. There’ll be the opportunity to throw a pot, make a head garland, and much more.

Visit the new Gweithdy gallery and explore crafts through the ages before having a go at making.

Events Officer, Bernice Parker said:

“We’re delighted to launch the first St Fagans Craft Weekend. In October 2018 we opened Gweithdy, a purpose-built gallery which celebrates the skills of generations of makers. We’re pleased to be able to bring the Museum alive with craft activities and demonstrations across the site.”

“We’ll be launching a new programme of craft courses as part of the weekend so that visitors who enjoy the mini masterclasses can sign up for an in-depth course to hone their skills.”

In October 2018, St Fagans National Museum of History completed the biggest redevelopment project in the history of the Museum. This was made possible by funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Welsh Government and other supporters. St Fagans was awarded the largest grant ever given by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in Wales in 2012 to help tell the stories of life in Wales over 200,000 years and more.

St Fagans National Museum of History has been selected as one of five finalists for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2019, regarded as the most prestigious museum prize in the world. The annual award celebrates innovation and exceptional achievement in museums and galleries across the UK.
