Gwlana Gets Going At The National Woollen Museum

June sees the National Woollen Museum, Dre-fach Felindre, celebrate the old Welsh custom of Gwlana, with a series of events aimed at the whole family.

Gwlana or wool gathering was an important event in the rural calendar. At this time of year the women followed the Drovers or Shearers along the traditional paths, gathering scraps of fleece from the fields and hedgerows.

When they returned home, the fleece was washed and spun by hand and the yarn used to knit stockings, socks and caps or woven into blankets. Knitting was an important social activity when people met in each other's homes to talk or sing and tell stories while they knitted.

We bring the story of Gwlana to life this month. Why not take part in one of the activities based around our Art Cart
