Book Launch At The National Woollen Museum

Years ago, Dre-fach Felindre was known as the Huddersfield of Wales, because of the thriving woollen industry in the small Carmarthenshire village. Today, the village is home to the National Woollen Museum and to the national collection which relates to this important industry.

On 30 June, a series of books by Dr Geraint Jenkins looking at the history of the industry in the local area will be launched at the museum. The books, published by Gwasg Carreg Gwalch, bring the industry and the history of the museum itself alive. Dre-fach Felindre and the Woollen Industry and The Flannel Makers, are both available in Welsh and English and are priced at £5.50.

The museum, which is one of the National Museums & Galleries of Wales' six sites, was redeveloped over recent years as part of NMGW's Industrial Strategy, and this is documented in one of the books published this week.

Sally Moss, Curator and Head of the National Woollen Museum said:

"These two books are miniature classics that have been brought up to date and include a large number of present day photographs in full colour. As well as giving the history of the craft and its craftsmen, these volumes now offer the readers information as to where the craft can be seen today and especially concentrating on the National Woollen Museum and its recent refurbishment."

Dr Jenkins spent his career working for NMGW, and was at one time head of the Welsh Industrial and Maritime Museum and the Museum of Welsh Life. These books were written during this time.

Dr Jenkins will be signing copies of the books at the National Woollen Museum from 2.30 pm onwards.

Other NMGW sites are the National Museum & Gallery, Cardiff, Big Pit: National Mining Museum, Blaenafon
