Find out about songs and skeletons in south east Wales this May

There's plenty going on to entertain the whole family at Big Pit and the National Roman Legion Museum this May. As well as celebrating Museums & Galleries Month and Adult Learners Week, the two museums offer a wide range of fascinating activities and events for you to enjoy.

Every Sunday throughout May a different band or choir from around the south Wales valleys will be bringing their music to Big Pit

  • 7 May Markham & District Colliery Band
  • 14 May Treherbert Band
  • 21 May Radyr & Morganstown (Melingriffith) Band
  • 28 May Beaufort Male Voice Choir

All concerts take place on the patio outside the Pithead Baths and start at 2.30pm.

Make Merry Music

Come along and try your hand at playing a range of musical instruments, then have a go at making your own. Sundays throughout May and 27 May – 4 June, 11am – 3pm.

Museums & Galleries Month
Curating our Community

A number of local community groups will be telling their own stories in the museum throughout May. Exhibitions open 9.30am – 5pm, 1 – 31 May.

Craft Sessions in the Museum

Drop in and enjoy a range of crafts suitable for the whole family 13 May, 11am – 3pm.

Gladiator Talk

Learn about the dangerous and deadly world of Roman gladiators, with Dr Mike Thomas.
20 May, 2.30pm.

Adult Learners Week

Take part in a series of interactive talks where you can choose the subject.
22-26 May, 3.30pm.

Roman Bones Workshop

Activities include soil testing and reconstructing a Roman skeleton.

29 May – 2 June, 11am – 4pm. £1 per child.

Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales operates seven national museums across Wales. These are National Museum Cardiff, St Fagans: National History Museum, National Roman Legion Museum, Caerleon, Big Pit: National Coal Museum, Blaenafon, National Wool Museum, Dre-fach Felindre, National Slate Museum, Llanberis and the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea.

Entry to all the museums is free, thanks to the support of the Welsh Assembly Government.
