Discover why Italy are so good at football, in south-east Wales this July

Italy may have won the football World Cup this year but 2,000 years ago the Roman Empire ruled over most of the civilised world. Come along to the National Roman Legion Museum this month to find out more about this civilisation that shaped the landscape of modern Europe.

Learn about how Romans lived and died at the Legions of Caerleon and Usk, by exploring what they wore and what they ate, how they educated their young and how they buried their dead. Children can visit the Barrack Room and learn how young soldiers were trained and how they lived in the Barracks.

If you prefer to learn about more recent history, why not take an exciting trip 300 feet underground and learn about the world of the miner at Big Pit: National Coal Museum?

Hundreds of thousands of men have worked in the coal industry over the last two hundred years, and you can experience the conditions they faced day to day in a guided underground tour with an ex-miner. If you are slightly more faint-hearted, you can visit our Mining Galleries, which simulate underground conditions and give an idea of what a more modern coalmine would feel like.
