World-class archers target Welsh location

St Fagans: National History Museum to host World Field Archery Championships

In preparation for the FITA World Field Archery Championships, the finals of which will be held at St Fagans: National History Museum in 2008, competitors from across the globe will come together at the Museum on 9 September 2007 for a practice run.

Scheduled to take place between 1 and 6 September 2008, the Championships will be held across three locations in south Wales with the individual and team finals hosted at the open-air museum at St Fagans.

Owned by the Federation Internationale de Tir a l’Arc (FITA), the first Championships were held in 1959 and are now held biannually. Jean Howells, Chairman of Organising Committee said:

“This is a great opportunity for Wales to showcase itself to the rest of the World. I am extremely pleased at the support and enthusiasm shown by the staff involved at the competition venues and I am confident that we can produce a Championship that will be a credit to all those involved.”

Matthew Davies, St Fagans: National History Museum Activities Co-ordinator is looking forward to next year’s competition:

“We’re very proud St Fagans has been chosen to host such a big event in the sporting calendar. We’re especially looking forward to next year as we’ll be holding exciting exhibitions and events during the summer and early autumn to coincide with the competition. This will give visitors an insight into the skill of archery and related themes.”

This year’s event – an opportunity for archers to familiarise themselves with the site – will take place on 9 September 2007 at St Fagans: National History Museum from 10 am to 5 pm. Entry to all Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales sites is free, thanks to the support of the Welsh Assembly Government.

Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales operates seven national museums across Wales. These are National Museum Cardiff, St Fagans: National History Museum, the National Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon, Big Pit: National Coal Museum in Blaenafon, the National Wool Museum in Dre-fach Felindre, the National Slate Museum in Llanberis and the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea.
