The wonders of Welsh wood

Woodcraft Day at St Fagans: National History Museum

St Teilo’s Church - which includes a hand-carved rood screen - has recently opened at St Fagans: National History Museum and a lovespoon dating back to 1667 is part of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales’s collections. Whether it’s one of our national icons made out of one piece of wood or wooden furniture, local craftspeople will be demonstrating the art of woodcarving at the Museum on 17 November and 1 December 2007.

From 10 am–5 pm on both days, visitors to St Fagans will not only be able to enjoy an exhibition of wood carvings but will also be able to see the craftspeople at work.

Emma Lile, Curator of Traditional Music, Sports and Customs at St Fagans said:

“St Fagans is renowned for telling a story about how the Welsh used to live and work through a collection of historical buildings from all over Wales. In addition, we try to host exhibitions and demonstrations such as Woodcraft Day in order to give visitors a real sense of what life was like. Wood carving – especially the skill of creating lovespoons - is one of Wales’s most innate crafts, and fits well with our collections here at the National History Museum.”

Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales operates seven national museums across Wales. These are National Museum Cardiff, St Fagans: National History Museum, National Roman Legion Museum, Caerleon, Big Pit: National Coal Museum, Blaenafon, National Wool Museum, Dre-fach Felindre, National Slate Museum, Llanberis and the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea.

Thanks to the Welsh Assembly Government, visitors can enjoy FREE ENTRY to the Museum, which is open from 10 am and 5 pm daily.
