The story of a saint

St David's Day talk by Dr John Davies and Dr Elin Jones

Free Welsh cakes for visitors, traditional Welsh music and storytelling are all part of March the 1st celebrations at St Fagans: National History Museum, which celebrates its 60th Birthday this year. But why do we as a nation dedicate the day to Saint David and should the ocassion be a holiday in Wales?

These questions will form a debate hosted by historians Dr John Davies and Dr Elin Jones at Oriel 1, St Fagans at 3pm, 1 March 2008. Dr Davies and Dr Jones will be discussing Saint David in the context of other Welsh saints - some of who are recognised across the globe and others more familiar locally - and the relevance of our patron saint to the people of Wales today.

“We are delighted both Dr John Davies and Dr Elin Jones are joining us on the first of March,” said Matthew Davies, St Fagans: National History Museum Activities Co-ordinator. “As a Museum, we want to share information with people about who Saint David was and why we still remember him today.”

St Fagans will be celebrating with music, storytelling, arts and crafts from 10am until 5pm and visitors can enjoy free entry to the site thanks to the support of the Welsh Assembly Government. As part of the day, tours of the site with a Deaf guide will also be held at 2pm. Please reserve a place by emailing boxoffice@museumwales.ac.uk.
