Say Cheese for Big Pit!

Tension is mounting for five young people in Torfaen who have reached the final of a competition to design the flavour of a new cheese to celebrate Big Pit's 25th anniversary.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, in partnership with the Blaenafon Cheddar Company and the Food & Market Division of the Welsh Assembly Government, the museum is celebrating the links between mining and food by asking local school children what flavours remind them of the coal industry or visits to Big Pit.  The winner will be announced at a celebration on Sunday 6 April at 2pm.

Kathryn Stowers, Communications Officer at Big Pit said:  "We were delighted when over 100 entries were received.  After a painstaking short listing process five cheeses were selected to be made up for the final taste test over the weekend of our anniversary.

"We have a varied judging panel made up of food writer and broadcaster, Angela Gray, Valleys Manager for the South Wales Argus, Darren Evans, Production Manager at Vin Sullivan Foods, Tim Davies as well as two representative staff from Big Pit, and the flavours of cheese we have for them to taste is very exciting. Visitors to Big Pit over the weekend of the anniversary will also be able to have their say in the competition by taking part in a blind tasting of all the short listed cheeses.

"The children who have had their cheese short listed come from a number of schools around the Blaenafon area and they are very excited to be part of this unusual competition.  They will each get a sample of their own cheese to take home, as well as a goodie bag from Big Pit and the Blaenafon Cheddar Company.  The winner will also receive a specially prepared hamper from the Food & Market Division of the Welsh Assembly Government, and will have their cheese on sale throughout Wales for the forthcoming year as the Big Pit Anniversary Cheese."
