Wanted: Landrover Series 2

St Fagans: National History Museum's Sound Archive was established 50 years ago. Half a century has passsed since Museum staff used to travel across Wales in a Landrover and caravan to record our ancestors' traditions.

Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales will note this important milestone at the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff this year. To add to the celebrations, the Museum is looking for a green Series 2 Landrover, similar to the vehicle which was used in the 50s, to exhibit next to their stand.

In 1958, a radio appeal was made by Prof. Griffith John Williams for support to create an archive of oral history at St Fagans. Today, the Museum's appealing to anyone who owns this kind of petrol vehicle, with a hard top, short wheel base and is prepared to lend it to St Fagans for the short term, to contact Meinwen Ruddock on 029 2057 3427 or Lowri Jenkins on 029 2057 3444.

"Recording speakers on different aspects of everyday and cultural life is an important aspect of the Museum's work," said Meinwen Ruddock, Archivist. "We look forward to being able to share information with visitors to the stand, about the way oral history was collected at the beginning and the 11,000 recordings we have today. Visitors might even find a member of their family in the collection!"

There will be an opportunity for visitors to Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales's stand to enjoy, remember and re-live history in a Prefab house from the 1950s, and be inspired by famous art works. A series of talks will also be held throughout the week:

  • Art in the future by artist Iwan Bala and Ann Jones, Collection Projects Curator, Art Council England (Monday, 4 August at 3pm)
  • 2007 and beyond with Heritage Minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas (Tuesday, 5 August at 3pm)
  • Science of the Future - a collaboration with Cardiff University (Wednesday, 6 August at 2pm)
  • Art in Pembrokeshire - a preview of Oriel y Parc, St David's new art gallery (Friday, 8 August at 3pm)
  • Yesterday, today and tomorrow - Dr Beth Thomas discusses the history and the future of St Fagans: National History Museum (Saturday, 10 August at 3pm).

Admission to Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales is free thanks to the support of the Welsh Assembly Government.
