Celebration of a Welsh hero

St Fagans: National History Museum marks Owain Glynd?r Day.

Many believe Owain Glynd?r, who set up Wales's first Parliament in Machynlleth, Powys in 1404, is one of Wales's greatest heroes. At 3pm on Tuesday 16 September 2008, one of our bardic heroes, Iwan Llwyd, will be discussing the national leader at St Fagans: National History Museum.

A National Eisteddfod crown winner, Iwan Llwyd will be examining references in Welsh poetry to Owain Glynd?r, who fought for independence for Wales in the 15th century.

A poetry workshop will be held at Hendre'r Ywydd farmhouse, which is originally from Clwyd, the site of the first battle. Iwan Llwyd will also use St Teilo's Church, which is very similar to churches during Glynd?r's time.

Ken Brassil, History Education Officer at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales said: "Owain Glynd?r played such a key role in the development of Wales as a nation, we felt it was important to be able to give our visitors and young people an opportunity to delve into Welsh history on Owain Glynd?r Day. It is commemorated on 16 September because it was on that day in 1400 he was declared Prince of Wales."

There will also be an introduction to the prince by Geraint Thomas at Oriel 1 at 1pm.

Entry to the Museum and the event is free thanks to the support of the Welsh Assembly Government.
