£1m boost for art in Wales

A campaign to refurbish art galleries at National Museum Cardiff today (Tuesday, 14 October), received a welcome financial boost in the form of £1m capital investment from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The refurbishment for the upper west wing at National Museum Cardiff has been identified as a key priority of Amguedddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales in moving towards the establishment of a national gallery.

Michael Houlihan, Director General, Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales said, “This redevelopment will provide Wales’s art collections with nearly 40% more space, allowing us to show our prestigious collection of works dating from 1950 to today. The completion of the redevelopment will not only create bigger and better display spaces, it will also allow us to present stories of international and Welsh art running across five hundred years to the present day."

Although the detailed plans have yet to be finalised, the west wing will provide space for recent and contemporary art. The entire zone would also be capable of accommodating a major temporary exhibition of modern or contemporary art.

The Welsh Assembly Government will provide Amgueddfa Cymru with £1m over the next two years to enable this project to be realised. On completion of the west wing project, the entire first floor of the Museum will be devoted to the display of art, ensuring that the national collections can be enjoyed by all the people of Wales.

Entry to National Museum Cardiff is free thanks to the support of the Welsh Assembly Government.

Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales administers seven national museums across Wales. They are National Museum Cardiff; St Fagans: National History Museum; the National Roman Legion Museum; Big Pit: National Coal Museum; the National Wool Museum; the National Slate Museum and the National Waterfront Museum.
