Important plans for the display of art in Wales

A new report outlines proposals for a new national gallery for Wales, and a centre for contemporary art.

The Welsh Assembly Government, as part of the One Wales agreement, commissioned a review in 2007 to consider the options for developing a national gallery for Wales. Amgueddfa Cymru was asked to lead on the appointment of consultants to undertake this review, which also included the potential for establishing a national centre for contemporary art for Wales.

The steering group overseeing this appointment recognised that any proposal to establish the national gallery at National Museum Cardiff would also need to consider the implications for our natural history collections, so the consultants' brief was extended to consider this element.

The final reports were received by the Welsh Assembly Government in October 2008 and were discussed in plenary session by the Heritage Minister. The reports can be downloaded from the Welsh Assembly Government's website.
