Press Release

6 November 2008

On Saturday, 8 November 2008, a Remembrance Service will be held at the Newbridge War Memorial - which now stands at St Fagans: National History Museum, Cardiff.

The service is held at 10.50am with Deputy Lord Lieutenant - Wing Commander Graham Morgan, Don Touhig MP, the Newbridge branch of the British Legion and former soldiers attending to commemorate the sacrifice made by soldiers in the First and Second World Wars, and other wars.

Before this year's service, Reverend Jefford, will lead a procession to the memorial from the Museum entrance at 10:30am; the Museum will observe two minutes' silence at 11.00am. Visitors are welcome to join the service of remembrance, including a wreath-laying ceremony.

The small cenotaph at St. Fagans: National History Museum originally stood overlooking the industrial town of Newbridge near Caerphilly; it was built in 1936 to remember 79 soldiers who died in the First World War. Later, a plaque was added in memory of 37 local servicemen who died during the Second World War.

The cenotaph was re-dedicated at St Fagans in 1996 and a service is held annually to remember all the men and women of Wales who gave their lives for their country.

John Williams Davies, Director of St Fagans: National History Museum said:

"90 years since the end of the Great War, it is an honour for the Museum to hold this service with the Newbridge Branch of the British Legion. It will be an opportunity for all of us to pay our respects to the brave men and women who died fighting for peace and freedom in war."

Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales operates seven national museums across Wales. These are National Museum Cardiff, St Fagans: National History Museum, National Roman Legion Museum, Big Pit: National Coal Museum, National Wool Museum, National Waterfront Museum in Swansea and the National Slate Museum.
