Sisley landscape comes to light

On the Cliff, Langland on show at National Museum Cardiff

An important Welsh landscape by Alfred Sisley - the Impressionist artist - has recently been re-discovered and gone on public display for the first time since the late1960s.

On the Cliff, Langland (Private Collection, c/o James Roundell) is one of the highlights of Sisley in England and Wales, on display at National Museum Cardiff from 7 March - 14 June 2009. This exhibition brings Sisley's two painting campaigns in the UK - in England in 1874 and Wales in 1897 together for the first time.

"As far as we know, On the Cliff, Langland has not been shown in public since the late 1960s," said Charlotte Topsfield, Curator. "We were made aware of this fantastic work when the exhibition was on show at the National Gallery, London from November 2008, and were delighted to be offered the opportunity to share it with visitors to National Museum Cardiff. We are grateful to the owner for his generous loan.

"The painting shows the headland on the eastern side of Lady's Cove (now better known as Rotherslade Bay) and includes figures strolling on the winding coastal path - a favourite motif of Sisley's. It is a striking work of art and a wonderful addition to the exhibition."

Once in the possession of Sisley's daughter, Jeanne, this painting goes on public display for the first time in Wales.

Admission to Sisley in England and Wales which has been organised by Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales and The National Gallery, London is free thanks to the support of the Welsh Assembly Government.
