Waterfront gets set for national Adult Learners' Week

Ever wondered how to keep special objects in good nick? Have moths balls started to damage a precious outfit? Or have you always wanted to know how to store old photos or books? Well, the answer is here!

To celebrate this year’s Adult Learners’ Week (15-21 May), the National Waterfront Museum is hosting three themed workshops to help you get to grips with all sorts of conservation dilemmas.

On Wednesday 19 May find out how to care for clothes and textiles, Thursday 20 May get the chance to mend a pot and discover the techniques used to care for small objects and on Friday 21 May note the best preservation methods for delicate books and photos.

“It’s a great set of workshops that’ll be of interest to anyone who’s keen to develop their knowledge and skills in this area,” said Events Officer Miranda Berry. “Each workshop will be led by qualified Museum conservators, who have vast experience within the conservation world.”

Speaking about the pot mending techniques workshop, Conservator Jen Griffiths said: “It’s an opportunity for those interested in ceramics to come along and find out a bit more. I’ll be looking at the different type of repairs that can be achieved with ceramic materials and those attending can try some of the techniques themselves.”

All workshops are free and start at 2pm. Please book early to avoid disappointment (01792) 638950.

The Museum is also hosting an event to officially launch Adult Learners' Week and the Swansea Learning Festival. The free event will take place on Saturday 15 May (11-4pm) and will showcase numerous opportunities for adult learning across the city. Set in the grounds of the Museum, those attending can find out about courses from mono-printing to computing as well as have a go at belly dancing and African drumming. There will be arts and crafts activities for children and music from the Ospreys choir.

Speaking about the event, Clare Southard, West Wales Co-ordinator from NIACE Dysgu Cymru said: "We’re delighted to launch Swansea Adult Learners’ Week at the National Waterfront Museum. It's going to be a fun-packed day with lots of activities for everyone to get to grips with. There will also be advice about how you can develop your skills to get on in the workplace and improve your job prospects as well as details about courses available in your area - we look forward to welcoming you on Saturday."
