Flying start takes off at the Waterfront

BUDDING young artists have got a flying start to their careers with a special exhibition at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea.

The youngsters aged five and under, from Flying Start childcare based at Seaview Primary School and Stepping Stones Children’s Centre, will have their work on display until Saturday 17 July 2010.

Both groups worked alongside a professional artist on their projects and a story theme was used as a staring point for the artwork.

Children at Seaview chose the classic story The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and created a huge caterpillar using a variety of fruit and vegetables while the youngsters at Stepping Stones were inspired by the Wheels on the Bus story to produce a work of art from paint, glitter and cardboard.

Coordinator of the exhibition, Anna Westall, said: “The Flying Start programme aims to make a decisive difference to the life chances of children aged under 4 in the areas in which it runs.

“The artist-in-residence idea was inspired by similar work being done in Reggio Emilia, Italy, where the community has embraced the idea.”

Alison Sharp, childcare worker at Seaview, said: “A lovely activity to follow on from a much loved story. All the children and staff enjoyed and got involved. “

Sue James, the Museum’s Outreach Learning Officer who has worked alongside Flying Start to make this happen, said: “It’s fascinating to see how the Flying Start team have used some of the themes in the Museum such as transport and foods of the future in their project. The children along with the team’s support have created a fantastic exhibition which is well worth seeing.”

The bright and colourful exhibition which includes all the children’s work and photos on the process is on display until Saturday 17 July in the Museum's Red Wall Gallery.
