Vehicles, crafts and much more at the Waterfront

Think Gilbern cars, steam engines, whacky races and old-fashioned fire engines and you’ll start to get a feel for what’s ahead at the National Waterfront Museum this weekend (4 & 5 Sept).

Vehicle Day will hit the road from 11am till 4pm on Sunday 5 Sept and will be a chance for visitors to come along and see rare Welsh Gilbern cars, model railways and the Penydarren – a working replica of the world’s first locomotive in full steam action (weather dependent 12-3.30pm).

Visitors can also explore new additions to the collections, including ZECAR - a prototype electric car made in Port Talbot by Stevens Vehicles and a Sinclair C5, a battery electric vehicle invented by Sir Clive Sinclair in 1985. And did you know that South Wales played an important part in the C5’s development? Well it sure did as production was based at the Hoover Factory in Merthyr Tydfil.

Other highlights during the day include a whacky races themed Gener8 workshop (4 & 5 Sept at 1.30pm) - a hands on family activity which includes making prototypes and building models out of scrap, special interest talks for adults and young people as well as a special visit from Fireman Sam (on Sunday 5 Sept only).

Although, if vehicles aren’t up your street, then don’t worry, the Swansea Bay Craft Fair will be selling a range of locally produced gifts and treats from jewellery, ceramics and paintings to photography and other home made goodies. The fair will take place in the Museum’s main hall from 10am-4pm on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 Sept.

But if you’re keen to have a go at making some crafts yourself, then book yourself onto the Make and Mend workshop on Saturday 4 Sept at 1.30pm. Ideal for adults and young people, the workshop will be a chance for you to delve into baskets of forgotten bits and bobs and make something totally new and unique for the home.

“There’s something for everyone this weekend at the Museum,” said Events Officer Miranda Berry. “Whether you’d like to discover more about model railways, admire the immaculate Gilbern cars, get crafty or browse the delights at the fair, there’s definitely something to keep you and the whole family entertained.”
