Celebrate Chinese New Year at the Waterfront

It’s the year of the rabbit and the celebrations are well underway……

This Saturday (5 February 11am-4pm), the National Waterfront Museum will come alive with activities for all the whole family to mark Chinese New Year.

Working with the city’s Chinese Community Centre, visitors will experience the ancient art of paper craft, lantern making and Chinese painting as well as take part in tai-chi tasters, shuttlecock kicking, calligraphy and games with chop sticks.

There will also be a mystery quiz featuring traditional Chinese objects with prizes for those who get the most answers right.

The Lord Mayor of the City & County of Swansea, Councillor Richard Lewis will officially open the celebrations followed by performances from the Chinese Women Dance Group and Swan Gardens Elders Group.

Head of Museum Steph Mastoris said: "We’re delighted to be working with the Chinese Community this year to deliver such a fun-packed programme. It’ll be a fantastic opportunity for visitors to come along and discover more about the culture and traditions of Chinese New Year.”

“Chinese New Year is a big event for us here in Swansea,” said April Kong, Centre Manger at the Chinese Community. “Our annual event is always full of exciting performances and lots of lively activities and it attracts a diverse range of people - we hope that 2011 at the Museum will see our biggest and most popular event yet.”

But the fun doesn’t stop there - on Sunday 6 February there will be an animation screening of McDull Kung Fu Ding Dong in the Museum’s Warehouse Gallery at 2pm, the latest in the popular and award-winning series about a Hong Kong pig.
