Shampoo invention takes centre stage at Waterfront this weekend

Ever wondered how the soapy stuff you use to wash your hair is made? Well now’s your chance to find out!

As part of National Science & Engineering Week, the city’s National Waterfront Museum will be going all fruity and fragrant in a special two-day workshop titled Invent your own Shampoo.

Working with Alberto Culver, one of the UK’s leading cosmetics and hair care manufactures, budding scientists will get the chance to test their skills at creating a unique personalised shampoo to take home.

The event will also include an opportunity for visitors to test their sense of smell and vision through interactive demonstrations and the chance to discover how a leading manufacturing plant based in Swansea produces household brand names recognised across the globe.

A series of interactive stations will be set up to take visitors through the whole process. The first stop is a mixing station where they will fill their creations into bottles as keepsakes - themes for colours and flavours will revolve around Welsh history and heritage, for example dragons, coal and copper. Then they will move onto a labelling station to badge up their bottles, before the sensory testing area where the colours and fruity fragrances will be sampled.

“We’re delighted to be bringing this workshop to the National Waterfront Museum,” said Simon Lewis of Alberto Culver. “It’s a great way to encourage visitors to explore the science and technology behind such an everyday product.”

Invent your own Shampoo will run on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 March. It is a family-based event and booking is recommended (01792) 638950.

The free workshops will take place throughout the day at 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm.
