English rescuers train in Wales

Big Pit: National Coal Museum in Blaenafon was the location for a series of training exercises for Mines Rescue teams last week.

Mines Rescue expert, Brian Robinson, who is managing exercises, said: “We have rescue teams who work in the limestone mines around the Bath and Corsham areas of Somerset and Wiltshire and doing this exercise at Big Pit is good experience for them as they need to be able to operate in different mines, cultures and situations.

“Exercising at Big Pit will ensure they have better knowledge of rescue situations in a coal mine.”

Paul Green, Senior Deputy at Big Pit: “We are very happy that these teams are using our workings this week for their training experience, as we are still classed as a real coal mine.  We have a number of staff here who are trained Mines Rescue men, and it is useful for our staff and the west of England rescue team to share experiences.”

Big Pit is open to the public every day and offers a unique insight into the coal industry and coalfield communities across south Wales.
