Waterfront gears up for this year's Urdd Eisteddfod!

EUROPE'S largest competitive youth festival is on its way to Swansea and Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales will be there with fun activities and events for the whole family to enjoy.

Hosted by the National Waterfront Museum, visitors to the stand will have the chance to take part in crafts, join in sing-a-longs, meet costumed characters as well as have a seat in a Sinclair C5.

On bank holiday Monday (30 May), find out what Tedi Twt and Doli Glwt discovered at the Museum and join in with their adventures including story time at 10.30am, 12pm, 2pm and 3.30pm. Teachers and parents can also find out how the Museum encourages learning Welsh in the Foundation Phase of education.

Tuesday (31 May) will be all about fast speed cars with activities inspired by Swansea University and the team from the Wales Bloodhound Education Centre who have designed a 1000mph Bloodhound Supersonic Car.

The Countryside Council for Wales will join us on Wednesday (1 June). Come along and explore more about the countryside and industrial landscape as well as what wildlife to look out for at the nearby Crymlin Bog. Then, on Thursday (2 June) and Friday (3 June), help artist Dan McCabe create a bling copper collage inspired by past local industry and copper objects.

Also, look out for Mr Trevithick - who invented the first steam engine to run on rails. He will be travelling around the Maes on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and reminding you that his replica engine will be steamed up and in action at the National Waterfront Museum on Sunday 5 June from 12pm.

“We’re delighted to be hosting a stand at this year’s Urdd Eisteddfod,” said Head of the National Waterfront Museum, Steph Mastoris. “Plenty of activities to keep families entertained throughout the week have been planned and we look forward to welcoming the many thousands of young people from all over Wales who take part.

“This event is also a great opportunity for people to find out about Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales and the important role it plays in educating young people about Wales’ industrial past and innovative future.”

Aled Siôn, Director of the Urdd National Eisteddfod said: “We’re delighted that the National Waterfront Museum will be on the Maes this year with a great line up of things to do for visitors to the Maes. It’s great to see organisations such as the Museum using the Eisteddfod as a shop window for their year-long activities and I look forward to seeing some of the exhibitions during the week.”

Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales will also have a presence at the following events during the summer including the Hay-on-Wye Literary Festival from 26 May to 5 June, the Royal Welsh Show from 18-21 July and the National Eisteddfod from 30 July to 6 August.
