Waterfront gears up for rugby themed weekend

Rugby World Cup fever is continuing at the National Waterfront Museum this weekend with a special rugby-themed event for the whole family to enjoy.

On Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 November, the Museum will be transformed into a rugby haven with choral performances, art and craft activities for children plus a special appearance from World Cup rugby referee Nigel Owens.

On Sunday 6 November only at 2pm, Nigel will recall some fascinating tales from the front line including many amusing incidents from rugby matches, foreign trips as well as his off-field career as an entertainer.

Nigel boasts an impressive on-the-pitch career, he is an international and Heineken Cup referee and was the only Welsh referee at the 2007 World Cup in France. He is also one of only two referees ever to be appointed to referee two consecutive Heineken Cup finals.

Following the talk, Nigel will offer practical refereeing advice and give visitors the opportunity to sign copies of his autobiography - Half Time - which will be on sale at the gift shop.

Those visiting during the weekend will also have the chance to enjoy some traditional tunes from two established choirs. Ospreys Rugby Choir will perform on Saturday at 2pm followed by the Morriston Rugby Choir on Sunday at 1pm. On both days children can get creative and design their very own themed trophy and t-shirt to take home at a drop-in workshop from 11am-2pm.

Speaking about the weekend’s events, Head of Museum Steph Mastoris said: “We are delighted to welcome Nigel Owens to the Museum on Sunday and indeed organise such a fun-packed event.

“With the hype surrounding this year’s World Cup, it’ll be a great opportunity for visitors to hear first-hand just what it’s like to be involved in such a popular national sport as well as enjoy some rugby-themed entertainment.”

Other activities during the weekend include the Swansea Bay Craft Fair from 10am and 4pm and Make & Mend, a hands-on crafty workshop for adults on Saturday only at 1.30pm (advanced booking is required for this event).
