Local students prepare to take over Museum

On Friday 11 November, local students from Neath Port Talbot College will prepare to swap their text books for historical objects as they prepare to take over the National Waterfront Museum.

The activities are being organised as part of a UK-wide Kids in Museums initiative which gives children and young people the chance to shadow jobs, get involved in decision-making and offer their opinions on key issues.

More than 20 Tourism and Leisure Studies students will spend the day with the visitor services team, curators and gallery authors as well as work in the shop and help prepare for forthcoming events.

Matthew Tsui who will be part of the takeover event said: “This opportunity to take over the museum is really unique, providing me with valuable information that can back up what I have studied in the classroom. I can’t wait to see how the museum operates and to find out the different roles and responsibilities of those people employed by the museum. I hope this experience will clarify what direction to take in the industry once I have finished my studies.”

Carol Jarvis, a lecturer in Travel and Tourism and Leisure Studies at the College said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for students to experience what happens behind the scenes at the museum which is directly linked to their current studies. Some of our students will be applying for university or employment next year and this experience could provide them with the edge over their competition. You never know, one of our students could even be applying for a position at the museum in the future!”

“They’ll be helping us to do the jobs we normally do, such as answer the phone, help with school visits, facilitate in the shop, put exhibitions together and give guided tours - so all real life tasks,” said Education Officer, Mandy Westcott.

Speaking about the day, Head of Museum Steph Mastoris said: “We’re delighted to be able to give the students the chance come into the Museum and see exactly what it’s like to work here. I’m sure we’ll learn something from them too as they’ll probably have their own ideas and observations from the experience. This initiative provides an excellent platform for them to gain some real-life work experience and we’re all looking forward to taking part.”
