Re-Appointments to the Board of Trustees of Amgueddfa Cymru — National Museum Wales

Minister for Housing, Regeneration and Heritage, Huw Lewis and the President of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, Elisabeth Elias, have announced five re-appointments to the Museum’s Board of Trustees.

The re-appointments of Carole-Anne Davies, Miriam Griffiths, Gareth Wyn Jones and Christina Macaulay are made by the Minister for Housing, Regeneration and Heritage.  The re-appointment of Jonathan Osmond is made by the Museum.  Their current terms of appointment all end on 31 October 2011 and each has agreed to serve a further term from 1 November 2011 until 31 October 2015.

Huw Lewis said: ‘’I am extremely pleased that these Trustees will continue to serve on the Museum’s Board of Trustees for a further four years.  They have each made an invaluable contribution across the whole range of the Museum’s activities.’’

Elisabeth Elias said: ‘’I am delighted that these five trustees are able and willing to serve for a further term of office.  Their reappointment provides very valuable continuity and experience for the Board."

Carole-Anne Davies is Chief Executive of the Design Commission for Wales the national champion for good design in the built environment and an independent, expert public body.  She has worked in senior management for many years.  A former adviser to the Scottish Executive she is also a member of the Cardiff School of Art and Design Advisory Board and has been a visiting professional contributor at the Welsh School of Architecture.  She was awarded Welsh Woman of the Year for Arts and Media in 2005 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).  She holds no other Ministerial public appointments.

Miriam Griffiths has worked for 30 years in higher, further and adult education in Wales and has a keen personal interest in collections and exhibitions.  Following lecturing and teaching roles in Arts and Humanities subjects, including designing courses for adult students returning to higher education, she gained senior management experience in various positions including Director of the Open University in Wales and Head of the Department of Continuing Education at University of Wales, Bangor. She has served as honorary Chair and board or committee member of a number of charitable and educational organisations in Wales, the UK and Europe, and has also had working experience in the voluntary sector. Since retirement she has been an independent researcher and consultant in the education field and has undertaken voluntary work in Wales and abroad, including work with a women’s organisation in Africa.  She holds no other Ministerial public appointments.

Gareth Wyn Jones has held the positions of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor in the Schools of Biological and Agricultural and Forest Sciences at the University of Wales, Bangor and was for many years Director of the CAZS-NR (Centre for Arid Zone Studies - Natural Resources). Previous positions include Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Science and Policy Development at the Countryside Council for Wales and Manager, Chair and International advisor to the UK Department of International Development. He has also served in various capacities with the British Council and the European Commission, as a member of the National Trust’s Committee for Wales and as Chair of Amlwch Industrial Heritage Trust and the Wales Rural Forum. His academic background is the natural and earth sciences, and he is an author or joint author of some 180 scientific papers in Welsh and English.  He was elected as Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales in 2011.  He holds no other Ministerial public appointments.

Christina Macaulay has lived in Cardiff since 1993 and is an Executive Producer of factual programmes at BBC Wales, where she is responsible for a range of local and network series.  She previously served as a trustee of National Museums Scotland for eight years.  With an academic background in history and archaeology, she is a keen museum visitor, often with her two school aged children.  She holds no other Ministerial public appointments.

Jonathan Osmond is Pro Vice-Chancellor, Education and Students at Cardiff University.  Previously, he was Head of the Cardiff School of History and Archaeology.  His own research area in recent years has been the visual arts of modern Germany. He has extensive knowledge of museums and galleries in Europe and North America.
