Celebrations are underway for Black History Month

Preparations to mark this year’s Black History Month are well underway at the National Waterfront Museum.

On Saturday 20 October (11am-4pm), the Museum will come alive with a mix of hands-on workshops, musical performances, historical talks and community exhibitions.

Working with the African Partnership Group, the event will aim to acknowledge the contribution made by Black people to local, national and world history and culture.

Hands-on workshops will feature Jamaican art as well as graffiti sessions inspired by Black sporting heroes. Historical talks include Constructing the Third Crusade with Professor Edbury (11am), Literacy and Cooperation in Haiti with Jean-Robert Cadet (12pm & 2.30pm) and One Mankind by Nicky Delago (12pm, 1pm, 2pm & 3pm).

Performances will be showcased by the Welsh Glamorgan Youth Theatre and the African Community Centre for Young People as well as a display of traditional Nigerian dance by Place of Victory and a choral performance of Anti Restevek’s song - Lambi Konen Pou Tout Timoun by Ysgol Bryntawe.

Speaking about the event, Sue James, Learning Officer at the Museum said: “We’d delighted to offer such a rich and diverse mixture of activities that aim to highlight the contribution African people have made to Welsh culture and heritage. We have historical talks, music, school exhibitions and youth performances and every year it gets bigger and bigger. With so much to choose from, we really hope people will come along to join in the fun and find out more about our joint heritage.”
