St Fagans: National History Museum and National Museum Cardiff named in top 5 of "UK's Most-loved Museums".

2012-11-12St Fagans: National History Museum on the outskirts of Cardiff and National Museum Cardiff in the heart of the Welsh capital have both been awarded ‘Recommended Provider’ status in the November edition of consumer magazine Which?.
In February and March 2012, Which? magazine asked 4,239 of their members for their views on UK visitor attractions. For the second year running, St Fagans: National History Museum came top of the ‘Museum and Art Galleries’ category with a customer score of 93% based on overall satisfaction and the likelihood to recommend. National Museum Cardiff came fourth with a score of 89%. The two museums scored highly on the quality of information and staff helpfulness. Both museums belong to the Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales group and attract more than 1,000,000 visitors between them each year. Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Museum and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh were second and third on the list, with the British Museum coming in fifth.

“It means a great deal for our staff to have their hard work recognised with awards such as these. Having two world-class museums in Cardiff allows us to be at the heart of the tourism offer of Wales and puts us firmly on the international stage for culture.”
National Museum Cardiff houses Wales’s national archaeology, geology and natural history collections. In 2011, the Museum created a National Museum of Art for Wales by opening six new galleries of modern and contemporary art to add to its impressive exhibits of European Old Master paintings and French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings.
In July 2012, the iconic St Fagans: National History Museum received the biggest Heritage Lottery Fund grant awarded in Wales to completely transform the visitor experience at the open-air museum. Over the next five years, a new entrance hall, gallery spaces and a medieval Welsh Prince’s hall will be added to its collections of over 40 historic buildings.
This is the latest in a series of visitor accolades won by these museums. In 2012, a certificate of excellence was awarded to St Fagans and National Museum Cardiff by the travel review site TripAdvisor.
