Behind the Scenes at Big Pit

Visitors to Big Pit will have a special opportunity to see what really happens behind the scenes at Britain's favourite mining museum, thanks to a series of events held next week.

Every morning, visitors can join one of Big Pit's conservators on a tour around the site, looking at ongoing and future projects. After lunch, each day a member of staff will talk about their work and the part they have to play in the running of the colliery-turned-museum.

Big Pit has just received a complete facelift, with a £7.1 million redevelopment, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Welsh Assembly Government, Wales Tourist Board, the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Lloyds TSB Foundation and a number of private trusts and foundations.

Big Pit is part of the National Museums & Galleries of Wales, which currently operates six sites across Wales, the National Museum & Gallery, Cardiff, Museum of Welsh Life, St Fagans, Roman Legionary Museum, Caerleon, National Woollen Museum, Dre-fach Felindre Welsh Slate Museum in Llanberis and Big Pit itself. The National Waterfront Museum in Swansea opens its doors in summer 2005, telling the story of industry and innovation in Wales.

Entry to the museum and these talks is completely free, thanks to the support of the Welsh Assembly Government.
