Excavations by the Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust within Cardiff Castle in January 2006 revealed amongst other finds a hoard of late third century coins. The 600+ coins are of a category known as 'barbarous radiates' - unofficial local copies of the official coinage of the day. The hoard will be studied with regard to both its immediate archaeological setting, in a pit full of scrap metalwork, and its wider regional context, especially in comparison with hoards of similar coins found at Caerleon and Coygan Camp (Carmarthenshire) already in the Museum's collection.

This hoard is the subject of a Treasure inquest.
