This project is funded by The Royal Society, and involves ourselves and the Russian Academy of Science, Zoological Institute, St Petersburg, Russia. The work will be carried out by Dr Vladimir Gnezdilov visiting Cardiff for two periods in each of 2007 and 2008, and Dr Wilson visiting St Petersburg once each year.
Issid planthoppers (Hemiptera: Issidae) are sap-feeding insects found commonly in many habitats. They are often flightless and so may be restricted in their distribution. The project will study the taxonomy of the species found in the western Palaearctic region (western Europe) so as to bring together scattered taxonomic information on this group. Around 400 species are described but further undescribed species are expected. Our collection has around 25% of the species represented and most of the genera, making it one of the best in Europe.
The outputs will include taxonomic research papers as well as an illustrated checklist of the species.
