Life in the Roman Legion

Drop in sessions every Monday and Saturday from 1st - 29th of August, 11am-1pm & 2-4pm

Almost 2000 years ago the Fortress of Isca (Caerleon) played a big part in the north-western frontier of the Roman Empire.  Why not pop in to meet one of our soldiers from the Second Augustan Legion? They will show you some of their armour, weapons and military equipment as well as telling you about life for a Roman soldier on the edge of the empire.

Fire is and always has been one of the most important and useful tools in the history of humanity. It provides us with light and warmth. It is key in the manufacture of many important things, and the preparation of much of our food. This was also the case for the Romans, but they were not able to just flick a switch as we do today. Come to this drop-in session to find out about the different ways in which they made fire and its many uses in life in the Roman world.

Toxic Romans

Thursday drop in sessions from the 4th-25th August, 11am-1pm & 2-4pm

What have the Romans ever done for us? We often reel off lists of accomplishments like aqueducts, public baths, roads and education, but the Roman Empire also had a downside. Some of what they did was definitely not environmentally – or human – friendly. Come to this drop-in session to find out more about toxic Romans.
