In 1917 millions of British men had been sent to the battlefields, and people at home were enduring hardship, food shortages and unprecedented loss. The Bureau of Propaganda commissioned eighteen artists to produce this set of images, to inspire a war-weary public. The artists include Frank Brangwyn, C. R. W. Nevinson and Augustus John.

Although the subject matter and themes were highly prescribed by the Bureau the images reveal the impact of the war on society, particularly on the role of women. The prints were widely published and exhibited, but support was not universal, with some of the images criticized for idealising war.

A complete set was presented to the National Museum of Wales in 1919, and the prints were exhibited for the first time ever at National Museum Cardiff in 2014. This catalogue includes all 66 images, by 18 different artists.
