Members of the Cardiff and District Women's Suffrage Society marching in Cathays Park, 1913

From £10

One of many marches organised around the UK in support of the Women's Suffrage Movement in 1913. Mrs Henry Lewis, on the left, was the President of the Society. Women in the background are wearing sashes, ribbons or decorations on their hats in the Suffragette colours of purple, white and green. These were first used at a Women's Suffrage and Political Union rally in Hyde Park, London in 1908. Purple stood for the royal blood that flows in the veins of every suffragette, white for purity in private and public life, and green the colour of hope and the emblem of Spring.
