Overview

The Arcade Vaults and the Swansea Waterfront Museum present a Digital Skills workshop for years 7-9. The session aims to teach the basics of level and game design using different versions of Nintendo’s Mario Bros games over the various consoles from the 80s to recent times.

Details

After a short introduction, learners will work in teams of around 4 that will be put into two groups. The first will collaboratively analyse the Mario games, looking at aspects of game design that will give an understanding of what makes a level subjectively good (such as game mechanics, speed, graphics, character abilities etc).

The second group will work as a team to create their own level in Mario Maker on the Wii U following a basic introduction to the game. The groups will then be asked switch over during the workshop. At the end, all groups will be asked to play each other’s games and a comparison can be made between the levels designed where the teams looked at the other aspects of game design and those that didn’t.

Aims

Key skills that will be learnt during the workshop include collaboration, analysis, basic game mechanics and level design. It is also an opportunity to develop skills within the Digital Competence Framework such as producing, collaboration and evaluating, as well as computational thinking.
