Edouard Manet’s Portrait of Monsieur Jules Dejouy

Painted in 1879, Manet’s portrait of Jules Dejouy (1815-1894) is one of the artist’s most significant late portraits, which has recently ‘resurfaced’ after many decades away from the public eye in a private collection.

This affectionate and lively portrait of Manet’s cousin depicts someone who became an important figure in the artist’s life following the death of his father in 1862.

This talk will explore the significance of the portrait in Manet’s career and explain how it is a perfect addition to the world-renowned collection of Impressionist art bequeathed to Amgueddfa Cymru Wales by the sisters and pioneering collectors Gwendoline and Margaret Davies.

It will also introduce the proposed conservation project, which aims to transform the painting and restore it to its original appearance.

This talk will be delivered in the curator's first language: English
