Museum Talks: A History of Cider Making in Wales

Location: Online Event
Date and time: Thursday 8 September, 7-7:30pm
Cost: Pay what you can / Suggested donation £5

An illustrated history of making cider in Wales from the early vague references, its growth into a widespread rural activity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, its decline, then its revival in the late 20th century. Cider is an alcoholic drink made from the fermented juice of apples. It was the staple drink of many of the rural inhabitants of the Welsh border counties until the early years of the twentieth century. Cider making was a skilled and ancient craft widely practised until the late 1950s, when it was largely replaced by factory produced cider. Traditional farmhouse cider continued to be produced on a small scale, however, keeping the craft alive, until a new crop of craft cider makers emerged in the 1990s onwards leading to its renaissance and development.

This session will be held in English.

Museum Talks: Hortus Culture

Location: Online Event
15 September 2022 6 - 7pm
Cost: Pay what you can / Suggested donation £5

Gardening for leisure and pleasure for wealthy Romans is a recognisable archaeological phenomenon within British Roman archaeology. The Latin word for garden is hortus, so Roman culture could be partly described as a ‘hortus’ culture.  This talk outlines the rationale for the creation and planting of a popular Roman-inspired garden at the National Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon.  International and regional Roman evidence for gardens and gardening will be briefly considered.

This session will be held in English.
