Annual Travel Grant

The Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) is pleased to announce the Fifth Annual Fitzgerald Travel Grant Program designed to assist members with the cost of attending the Society’s annual meeting. A total of $3,000 is available and individual awards will be for a minimum of $750 USD each.

Applicants and Awardees’ Requirements

Applicants should be current members of the Society. Preference will be given to graduate students and emerging professionals in fields related to the management and conservation of natural history collections. Applicants from the institution hosting the meeting will not be eligible.

Awardees are required to make either an oral or poster presentation at the meeting and to be first author on the presentation. Receipt of the grant is contingent on the acceptance of the applicant’s abstract by the local meeting committee. As part of the conditions of the grant, successful applicants will also be required to produce a short article (1,000 words) based on their presentation for publication in the SPNHC Newsletter.

Travel Grant Application

Applicants should submit the following:

  • A completed application form
  • A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s supervisor or major graduate advisor.
  • A statement (maximum 350 words) from the applicant describing how attendance at the meeting will benefit him/her.
  • An abstract for the paper/poster the applicant intends to present.
  • An estimate of the total costs for travel and accommodation.

Application Submission, Deadline, and Review Process

These documents should be emailed to SPNHC2014@museumwales.ac.uk. The deadline for applications is March 1st 2014. The 2014 SPNHC Conference Local Organizing Committee will review the grant applications and select recipients. Successful applicants will be notified by March 8th, 2014. If you are not able to attend the SPNHC annual conference, please notify the Conference Local Organizing Committee as soon as possible to ensure the grant can be awarded to another deserving applicant.
