My First Museum Visit

Big Pit National Coal Museum

Come and meet Butty Bear who will help your class become mini miners. Experience a Museum gallery for the first time and explore the galleries with our interactive boxes.

Each class will have their own Butty Bear take back to school to take on future museum visits.

After lunch enjoy a hands on, interactive wash day session or alternatively a welly walk in our outdoor classroom, Coity Tips. (Ask for seasonal availability upon booking)

Full day session led by staff

Cost £120 up to 35 pupils.

How We Used to Live

Big Pit National Coal Museum

Find out what home life was like before the advent of washing machines, vacuum cleaners and electricity. How did women cope with the coal dust brought home on the clothes of the men from the mine? A hands-on session using objects to illustrate domestic tasks in the past, with a particular focus on washday. With songs, movement and an art activity.

Time for Washing - Free digital resource available to support this workshop.

 

Duration: 1 hour
Cost: Led by Museum staff - £40 for up to 15 pupils, £60 for up to 35. Free for some schools (see booking information).
