Shearing or Threshing Cake

The Recipe

You will need

  • three large cupfuls plain flour
  • half a pound sugar
  • half a pound bacon dripping
  • a little bicarbonate of soda, dissolved in a little tepid water and buttermilk
  • one pound dried fruit (currants and raisins)
  • two or three eggs, well beaten
  • buttermilk

Method

  1. Rub the fat into the flour and work in the other dry ingredients. 
  2. Mix gradually with the beaten eggs and add sufficient buttermilk to give a fairly soft consistency.
  3. Grease a cake tin, put the mixture into it and bake in a fairly hot oven for approximately an hour and a half.
