Apple Cake

Whitchurch, Cardiff

Traditionally this cake would be baked in a Dutch oven in front of an open fire in some districts in Glamorgan.

The Recipe

You will need

  • ten ounces self-raising flour
  • five ounces butter
  • five ounces demerara sugar
  • one pound cooking apples, finely diced
  • a little milk

Method

  1. Rub the butter into the flour and add the sugar and the diced apple.
  2. Mix with a little milk to make a fairly stiff dough.
  3. Grease a shallow tin, flatten the dough evenly into it and bake in a moderately hot oven for approximately half an hour.
