Bwdram was generally served for supper in some districts and it is known that bwdram a sgadan (bwdram and fresh herrings) was a popular combination, deemed a luxury in the coastal areas of Cardiganshire.

Flavoured with sugar, ginger and a little butter, this dish was given to the mother of a new-born baby owing to its medicinal qualities.

The Recipe

You will need

  • one large cupful sucan meal (or oatmeal)
  • one quart tepid water

Method

  1. Steep the meal in the water overnight. 
  2. Strain through a very fine sieve and add a little water if the mixture is too thick. 
  3. Boil, stirring continuously, for about five minutes. 
  4. Pour over pieces of bread in a bowl.
