Nettle Beer

This drink was regarded as an excellent tonic.

Upper Banwy, Montgomeryshire.

The Recipe

You will need

  • half a pound young nettle leaves
  • four ounces hops
  • half a pound sugar
  • one lemon, sliced
  • one ounce ginger
  • one ounce cream of tartar
  • a little yeast

Method

  1. Cover the leaves and hops with water and boil thoroughly. 
  2. Strain the liquid and leave to cool to blood heat, before adding the remaining ingredients. 
  3. Finally add a little yeast and allow to ferment overnight.
  4. Strain, pour into bottles and cork securely.
